Why not to rent an equipped safari 4x4 from Hertz in Namibia

When I took delivery of my 1st vehicle at the Hosea Kutako Airport the deep cycle battery was totally discharged and the 12 volt power point inside the cab to power my GPS didn’t work. After trying to charge the battery over night the C tech charger gave a battery error indicating a faulty Battery. This resulted in us not being able to start with our trip or to stock up on any food needing to be refrigerated as the fridge stops the moment you switch off the vehicle.

Hertz Namibia delivered a replacement vehicle, fully inspected and promised to be perfect after this first disaster. Upon inspection the following was not working. Deep cycle battery totally discharged, Air Compressor not working, tyre pressure monitoring system not working 2 sensors missing, spare wheel flat, badly damaged rim and worn tyre. Tyre lever used to lower spare wheel and to operate the jack broken. Tailgate sticky and difficult to open. I again charged the battery overnight and got the C tech charger error indicating battery faulty.

The next morning Hertz promised me a 3rd vehicle which was still at LA Sport after being serviced. Got there and again deep cycle battery totally discharged and vehicle terribly dirty.

I insisted that they replace the faulty battery with a new one and swop the tyres from vehicle 3 to vehicle no 2. The air compressor was missing a fuse.

We eventually left Windhoek 2 days late with a sticky tail gate and tyre pressure monitoring system that doesn’t work. The tailgate got totally stuck 3 days later and we couldn’t get access to our food and cutlery in the drawer system. The next day Toyota in Walvis Bay managed to get it open and re aligned.

So take note if you are planning an exploring Namibia in a fully equipped 4x4 Hertz is not the way to go….!!!!!
