Toll gate RIP-OFF

I have recently been provided with a courtesy car by Ford since my car is in for warranty repair. The gave me a rental car from Hertz. Driving regularly between Rustenburg and Pretoria, I use the N4 Bakwena freeway. The car was fitted with an E-tag. I was shocked however to see the toll fees that were charged to my credit card. Upon further investigation I noticed that the fees were exactly 48% higher than the gate tariffs.

I contacted their customer care and was told that that Hertz charges and admin fee on top of the toll fee and that this is stated on the contract and the website. The contract merely states that there is an admin fee and the website says you must use a non-etag lane to avoid the admin fee. In other words you have to pay for the gate by cash or card. The problem is that all lanes have etag sensors, so this is impossible.

I would have been content on an admin fee of 10%, but 48% is ludicrous. It must be a very lucrative business to make 48% return on all manual toll gates passed through by their cars. Brilliant idea for making lot of money by doing absolutely nothing - a total RIP-OF

So I sent the info as requested. Here is the response. Thank you for your email. Hertz has an E-tag placed in each of our vehicles to provide our clients with the option and convenience of only paying on return and not waiting in a queue or having to pay cash at the time when passing through a toll gate. Customers pay the “standard tariff” as per the Government Gazette. Hertz adds an administration fee onto the “standard tariff” to enable the recovery of system development costs and also the resources necessary to manage e-toll compliance. Hertz does not apply “capped” toll charges. Please note that most toll gates provide you with the option of going through a cash paying or non-cash paying queue. Even if the tag picks up, you do still have the option of paying cash at the gates. If you do pay cash at the toll gates and we charge you as well, Hertz will gladly refund the money providing we are issued with a copy of your receipt confirming cash payment. Again I say. Total ripoff. 48% admin fee. I which I was in this business. Can you imagine a fee of 48% on each standard toll gate that is passed through by their fleet of cars. It should provide a very steady flow of income. I will no lodge a complaint with the National consumer commission to investigate this. Beware of these guys. Once they have your credit card info....it is basically a blank cheque.

That is what I did. The response you sent me 7 days later is what I copied in the text above. Your agent just points to the contract that has a blanket statement saying that an admin fee will be charged. I responded to that email on the customer relations email you provided 6 days ago and still no feedback. I have been trying to resolve this with Hertz for more that 3 weeks now and it is not worth my time anymore. I have sent my response on your feedback to your agent CINDY SCHARNECK just now again. I this is not resolved by close of business today I will lodge the complaint the the consumer commission. I have already completed the complaint form and I will submit it to the consumer commission by close of business today if not resolve.
