Fuel overcharge

I recently rented a vehicle from Hertz/Dollar Thrifty at the O R Tambo airport. Vehicle was excellent and I had no issues with it.

However my issue came when I returned the vehicle.

The contract allows for you to either return the vehicle with a full tank of fuel in which case you get back your full fuel deposit or allow them to refuel the vehicle and charge you for the fuel and a surcharge for refilling the car.

I had previously been charged for fuel when the car I returned was not filled up to the brim so I filled the vehicle to the brim at the Engen 1 Stop above the Airport and returned the vehicle with a full tank and also offered my receipt for the fuel to the young white man who received the car.

He told me he didn't need the receipt and could see that the vehicle was filled and that I will be credited with my full deposit.

To my surprise I was subsequently charged for fuel based on the milage i did and a fuel surcharge.

I lodged a complaint and I am still waiting for a response from Hertz.

Clearly this is a **** as there can be no possible way the vehicle could take in a further 5-6 liters of petrol when I made sure it was filled it to the brim and all calls for proof that Hertz did indeed fill the vehicle after I returned it have not been answered.

I believe that either the personal at Hertz are involved in a **** alternatively this is a deeper issue with the company.

Totally unacceptable modus operandi.
