Costly inconsistent practices

I hired a car from the OR Tambo branch. They do a vehicle pre-inspection and give you the inspection sheet upstairs to sign before you take the vehicle. They tell you that if there are any problems, you should speak to the staff on the ground.

The person assisting me had forgotten to give me the keys when I left the counter, and I then had to wait. During this time I inspected the vehicle. I raised questions about some scratches and was told that any damage less than 1cm doesn't count and will not be penalized. Consequently nothing was written on the inspection sheet.

I had trouble locking the car and I went straight to the Pretoria branch (where i was scheduled to drop off the vehicle) to get assistance. This was an hour after pick-up. I asked them about the scratches and the person assisting me also reiterated that scratches less than 1cm are not CHarged.

When i returned the vehicle, the person receiving the car said all scratches irrespective of size are charged. Because nothing was recorded, he said he would charge me and that I have been misinformed by his previous colleagues. The colleague who inspected the car on the day I had problems confirmed the condition of the car, but the guy said if it's not on the charge sheet it doesn't count.

the Pretoria branch then said they would do an investigation. If the scratches had been recorded before, it wouldn't be an issue. I got no feedback other than an invoice charging me for the scratch.

I think this is unfair considering the fact that the branch at the airport refuses to document any scratches, even cosmetic. This différent oractice of recording the condition of the car and pre-signing/inspecting had adversely affected me.
