HATRICK CLOTHING, QUICK TO AKS FOR FAVORS, SLOW TO PAY

We are a very small commissioned embroidery operation in Maitland Cape Town. Our neighbors, Hatrick, are a medium established clothing manufacturer and apparel distributor.

Early in 2024 we were asked to quite on a large job (HOUTBAY FOODBALL COMMUNITY / FILA) involving 5 designs on panels (pre-manufactured), supp**** to us in batches over 6 weeks.

However, Hatrick only paid approximately 50% of the invoices (over a period of 4 weeks), and communication went cold immediately as soon as I started to follow up on payments (TERMS were COD). The owner, a well known CT businessman from Cricket fame, avoided attempts to communicate, and staff ignored me.

After weeks of trying, he eventually responded, saying that they are penalized by their client for 'wrong embroidery'. Keep in mind this was done 3 months prior, and on COD TERMS which they clearly exceeded. Invoices were sent as we completed the assigned batches and at no point thereafter was it communicated that the job was short, or incorrect.

Initially, Mr Veitch ignored our monthly statements and our request to pay the outstanding balance, but later gave irrelevant and vague indications of dispute. We are now on 180 days, but no commitment from Hatrick to pay for the work we have done for them. The owner doesn't take calls, and his staff stonewalls you if you try to see him.

My advice to any suppliers, insist on strict COD terms, and keep your exposure small.
