Lights out at Harbour Lights

<p> </p> <p>Harbour Lights is situated at the slipway of Gordons Bay harbour and has a beautiful view. (Somewhat obscured by huge darkened picture windows.) One has to climb a narrow black staircase, past two very life weary wooden figures and over wood chips left after somebody seemed to have prepared for a braai, to reach the eatery. It seems as if the slip prevention has been removed from the stairs and I doubt that they are 300mm deep as required. There are no strips indicating where individual steps ends. Escorting my 96year old mother up and down was a bit of a challenge.</p> <p>In one corner a couple of large very dirty pictures of Hollywood stars of the sixties hang *****ed as long abandoned wall decorations do. The corner of the bar reminds that in years gone by this may have been a restaurant. Unfortunately, apart from its corner, the bar top was crammed with bottles of liquor as if it was hiding the fact that this once proud surface was now in line with the dirty dowdy decorations of the eatery.</p> <p>I had the Chefs Combo. Prawns and fish with chips priced at R150.</p> <p>And that is what it was, no little colour not a sign of a bit of salad or sauce. Just four dry prawns and a piece of hake curling at the corners. The prawns had all lost their lives as todlers and it seemed was then carefully aged in the wind and sun of our beautiful Cape. I have never seen prawns that were so ****** of every drop of wet. They looked asif they were crafted out of dry mealie leaves. The piece of hake was not much better. Dry to the point of choking with a hard backing as if that little bit of paper that separate the slivers of fish had not been removed. Eating a can of pilchards with a teas**** would have been a cullinary experience compared to this horror. </p>
