Unfair Fees charged and disgusting Customer Service Experience

On December 20th, I made a purchase using Happy Pay, under the impression that my repayments would be deducted over the course of two months. However, I was surprised to discover that the first repayment was to be deducted five days later, on December 25th—an issue that was not communicated to me upfront. Nowhere in the process was I given the option to adjust the repayment date to suit my pay cycle, which would have been more feasible for me in January.

I called your customer service team on December 24th to explain this issue, but the representative I spoke to was unhelpful and claimed there was nothing she could do. She stated that I had chosen the repayment date of December 25th, which is completely inaccurate. I received no assistance or resolution during this interaction.

To make matters worse, I have now been charged late fees of R100, which have accumulated to R400. This is entirely unacceptable, especially given that the situation arose from your system's lack of flexibility and transparency in choosing repayment dates. I refuse to pay these unjust fees and expect them to be reversed.

Once my second installment is paid, I will be deleting my account with Happy Pay and moving to more trusted and customer-friendly service providers like PayJustNow and Payflex.

When something is too good to be true, it generally is. I'll gladly pay a deposit with PayJustNow and Payflex, as they are trusted, which Happy Pay obviously is not!

Hi Tameren

Thank you for your review . I’d like to take a moment to clarify our payment options and how they work to ensure you have all the necessary information. We have sent you an Emil but we have not received a response as yet .

HappyPay Plus:
This is our primary offering, prominently displayed on merchant websites. With HappyPay Plus, users can make payments in two instalments without requiring an initial deposit. To access this option, users are required to link their bank accounts for an affordability assessment. Based on this assessment, a spending limit is allocated. Once the limit is approved, users can proceed with purchases without needing to make a deposit.
On the merchant’s website, this is presented as our primary offering. During the purchase journey, it is clearly indicated that users need to upgrade and link their bank account to access the no-deposit option.

HappyPay Lite:
This is our default payment option, designed for users who may encounter challenges linking their bank accounts or prefer not to do so. HappyPay Lite allocates a minimum spending limit based on the user’s credit score. Since no affordability assessment is performed, a deposit is required for this option to mitigate the higher credit risk.

When completing your application, you confirmed that your salary is paid on a certain date . While we don’t advertise specific payment dates, we align your instalment due dates with your payday for convenience.

For example, if you place an order on the 24th and your payday is the 25th, your first instalment will be due on the 25th.

We value transparency and always aim to make our payment process as clear as possible. If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help!

Kind Regard
Happy Pay Team
