Halyards Hotel

We use to take our parents to the Halyards Hotel in Port Alfred on a regular basis, especially on the 2 January each year, as this is their wedding anniversary. This year on the 2 January we took them again as they are married for 62 years. It is a 300km plus from Port Elizabeth and back. On our arrival we enjoyed a drink, but had to sit in the sun as there are no longer umbrella's The food used to be excellent in the past, but has really deteriorated since our last visit. We were informed by the manager that they are running late and that the doors will only open at 12H45. The doors opened at approximately 13H15. We had to wait for fish and chicken to be dished up as it was finished although I was only no 10 in the queue . The variety of dishes were also reduced drastically since our last visit. We were still seated, when the kitchen staff started dishing up for themselves. My father is 85, and had a stroke and unable to walk by himself. I had to struggle to get him to the hotel from the parking area. We previously asked the manager if the could provide a wheelchair only to find that once again, there was not any wheelchair available. My mother is 80 years old. The toilets were filthy. We asked that Onica contact us regarding the poor service. She did contact us and mentioned that 40% of the staff did not come to work. They do not provide wheel chairs and that we at least had 5 years of good service. We did not expect this reaction. She also mentioned that they reduced their prices during and as a result of covid. I do not want a cheap lunch, and are prepared to pay more for what the standards were. However, after this bad experience, on a special day for our parents, they will not see us again.
