Horrific treatment of 9 year tenant after years of loyalty...

As a loyal tenant of nearly 9 years with Halbe Properties I was treated disgustingly when my contract came to an end. I received the worst treatment possible by Karin Ditchfield and will not forgive her or Mr Halbe for treating myself and my wife the way they did. Starting January 2016 we went for nearly 6 months without an electricity bill. I then had to fork out a large sum of money to catch up the payments as Karin had no idea what was going on and I had made an arrangement with the owner (Mr Halbe) to repay the outstanding electricity bills which weren't being charged to our monthly account. I picked the problem up myself and made my own plan to correct the mistake. Then in 2017 we requested a prepaid electricity meter and Mr Halbe gave the okay so Karin supposedly submitted the paperwork but we never got the requested copies nor did she ever keep us updated so I can quite confidently say that it was never done. Four years on and two unsigned lease agreements later and I have had enough of this company's complete lack of concern for their tenants and their very nonchalant attitude towards doing business. We gave notice of cancellation for the lease agreement on Friday the 14th of February 2020 via email due to our intension to immigrate. Karin then only notified Doreen on the 25th of February of our intension to move after sending Karin a reminder email the following week. In the month and a half prior to lockdown only one prospective tenant came to view the apartment. We gave notice for the end of April which gave Halbe Properties 2 and a half months to find a new tenant. At the end of April we were not allowed to move due to lockdown regulations so we extended our stay with one month which suited Karin because she had still not found a new tenant. Due to the changes in lockdown level 4 regulations we notified Karin on the 8th of May that we would still be leaving at the end of May (not extending until the end of June) and asked her to please send us a letter of cancellation in order to get our inter-provincial travel permit so that we could drive through to Cape Town to stay with family as we have both been unemployed since the end of February. She then didn't reply and we had to send a reminder email on the 11th of May again to which she promised a letter of cancellation the same day. This went on until Monday the 18th of May when she had the audacity to call me and tell me that due to a technicality in how we worded the email we would not be released from the contract unless she found another tenant prior to us leaving. She then told us that there is a lady urgently looking for an apartment and can we please give her two days during the week to come and view the apartment to which I agreed. The lady then eventually agreed to viewing the apartment on Friday the 22nd of May at 6pm. We were due to leave on Tuesday the 26th of May and Karin knew very well that we urgently needed the letter of cancellation but dangled it like a carrot in front of us saying things like "I wouldn't want Mr Halbe to go without a month of rent" and "can you please sweet talk the lady into taking the apartment and pretend that the kitchen door isn't broken by just trying to ***** it back in place or making another plan". I obliged despite my irritation at Karin's blatant manipulative tactics. I gave the lady a tour of the apartment and told her how wonderful it had been to stay there over the past nearly 9 years. The lady then let Doreen know the same evening that she is taking the apartment and both Doreen and Karin were very happy. I then emailed Karin the same evening to remind her of our cancellation letter and also asked Doreen to remind her as well. Monday morning approached (25th of May) and I got another arrogant phone call from Karin to say that she can only send us the letter of cancellation once the lady pays her deposit AND signs the lease agreement despite knowing how urgently we needed the letter of cancellation. I was then furious and let Karin have it as that WAS NOT the agreement we had made. I then ended up going to the police station with an unsigned lease agreement and hard copies of all the email correspondence to which I was granted an inter-provincial travel permit. We are both unemployed and in the midst of a pandemic and this is the way Karin from Halbe Properties chose to treat us... Some landlords aren't even charging rent during the worst of the pandemic but good loyal tenants are treated this way by an agency which they have trusted for nearly 9 years??? This is completely UNACCEPTABLE!!!
