Gym Company tricks you into signing a contract you have no details of
I was on my way to school and was in a hurry when I came across the gym company team in Johannesburg Park Station,everything was done so quickly and the next thing I know I am signing papers I know nothing about and I gave them my personal details.Few days later I receive a call from them to come collect a gym tag I then ask them to please cancel whatever it is that I have joined I then learn that I have signed a contract of 3 years and I can no longer cancel it due to the fact that I missed the cancellation period which is 5 days after you have signed the contract.No one cared to explain to me what it is that I’m signing for,they didn’t even let me read the terms and conditions of that contract now I have to pay a cancellation fee of R1408 or I get blacklisted.Im a student and there’s no way I could have committed myself to a gyming contract of 3 years. I had no idea I was signing a 3 year contract. The people just rush you and trick you into signing these. This happened on around the 18 of May. Now I’m being told I can’t get out of a contract I would never have signed had I known the details. They say I must find someone to transfer the contract to, they can easily do that on their side. ****** and *********s. What do I do now?
2 days later a lady called, i dont remember her name, to get more details and I asked the lady to cancel the contract once I realized it was a 3 year contract. The contract wasn't cancelled.
I was later told I owe the gym already, and I thought the contract was cancelled. I wrote a complaint to hello Peter and someone called and said I must come discuss transfer or something with a lady called Amanda. We went yesterday found Amanda , but she is talking about cancellation fees.
Firstly is it not wrong to make someone sign a contract without explaining the contents, or at-least why did I not receive the contract details to go over? Is it not a consumers right to get copies of a contract? And explained to what they are signing.
Your gym people can't be pressurizing people to sign contracts without explaining the terms, or not listening to a client cancelling within your grace period. The moment I heard it's a 3 year contract I tried cancelling, but it was not cancelled over the phone, I wasn't told the procedure of cancelling when I signed and never got a copy of the contract.
Is there some sort of consumer protection or complaint place we can lay a complaint?
