Gym company getting me into more debt

I have membership with gym company for a year which expired this January 2018 I went to maponyamall gym company to cancel my contract and make arrangements to pay my arrears which I was told I could pay cash or deposit.But now the problem I'm having as told by the lady that works from accounts is that they can't cancel the contract even though it's experied nor can they stop the debit orders so basically i will pay for my arrears and still for a membership that I'm not using and has come to date.how is that even possible? So basically you are reaping me off......
