Day Light *******

I joined Gym Company Newtown in September of 2014 which the contract was for 36 months as I was living in Johannesburg CBD and it was convenient for me I am paying monthly premiums of R199. In 2015 August I called in to enquire the process for cancellation as I had relocated to Randfontein and I had no access to a Gym company around my area, the lady dealing with accounts at the Newtown Gym Company (I do not recall her name) then calculated how much I had to pay in order for the membership to be cancelled but I found the amount being a bit steep and I could not afford to pay it and then continued paying the monthly premiums as normal & the annual levy without using any Gym facilities.

On 29 August 2016 I called the Newtown Gym Company again to now enquire about the process to let someone gym on my behalf but I continue paying until the membership contract expires. The account lady whom assisted me told me that the person I’m electing to gym on my behalf must come to their gym as they needs to bring their ID to capture his personal details and for the them to grant him access because he cannot just go in to any gym with my tag as this would then be ***** and I understood as every company has its different processes and it made sense hence I called in first to find out the process and procedure.

My partner managed to go to the Newtown Gym Company on the same day I enquired what the requirement were, to my surprise he was request to pay R500.00 upfront in order for the changes to be made which this was never explained to me when I called. He ended up paying it.

In October I was debited the normal premium of R199 and an additional of R100.00 which I did not understand what is was for, so I reversed the R100. Now in November I was double debited the R199 which I had reverse one transaction that’s when I called in to get clarity as I was getting upset and irritated. I was then assisted by a lady dealing with account who then gave me A TOTAL DIFFERENT PROCESS AND CLARITY ON THE AMOUNTS THAT I DID NOT AUTHORISE, and this is what she had to say:

She said the R100.00 is for a tag for my partner(which he doesn’t have)
R199 is for the annual levies (I paid this sometime in February 2016)
R500 which was paid by my partner was a joining fee which was optional and did not have to pay(WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND IS PREPARED TO PAY A WHOLE R500.00 FOR SOMETHING THAT IS OPTIONAL REALLY?
WHAT IS MORE UPSETTING NO ONE HAD THE DECENCY TO EXPLAIN THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

It doesn’t make sense really that I have an existing contract and my partner will only be using the gym facilities for the remaining months why did he have to pay a joining fee and for that amount? I was told that this is a new contract therefore all the charges are applicable.

I would never have proceeded with if I was explained to correctly when I first enquired as there are hidden costs which are more costly compared to me having to continue paying as per the initial agreement.
