CONTRACT CANCELLATIONS - UNJUST ACTIONS

I had a gym membership with Gym Company and it would've ended in 2016 if I recall well. Besides the gym membership fees, we had to pay a fee for the gym management/upgrades and at the time I used to go to their Randburg branch. Their air conditioning never worked, their refreshment facilities weren't that hygienic and not to mention other things.

I had wanted to cancel my membership during my second term into it but had to pay cancellation fees and opted to wait it out till I reached my term. On reaching my term, I gave them a call and requested to cancel my membership, I settled what was owed during that time and advised the lady on the phone to cancel my membership as I had the option not to renew of which I chose not to renew.

Jump to 2019, I receive WhatsApp messages from someone claiming to be from The Gym Company advising me that my account is in arrears, claiming that my membership has been active after me calling and advising them to terminate as I had reached my end date of the contract. I recall confirming advising the person that I had waited for the contract period to come to its end dates so it wouldn't cost me to cancel. This is what I relayed to the person via WhatsApp and added to this I asked them why it took them close to 2/3 years to contact me and why the communication is via WhatsApp, I further advised that I had received no emails, calls SMS's detailing that I still have a membership with them or that I owe them any outstanding fees.

After me mentioning that my term was ending and thus didn't renew she asks me if in the text if I completed cancellation forms - my response to her was that if my contract was due to end why do I need to complete a cancellation form and at the time the person who handled my call mentioned none of this to me.

I find Gym Company administration office management to be very irregular, not above board and very targetted to make members trapped into contracts with fees that we are to pay to them ********ly.
