Cancellation Nightmare

I have called the Gym Company today to cancel my wife and my contact we moved and are no longer near the branch and I was told there would be a cancellation fee of around R1600 because the contracts are 3 year contracts. However I recall we took out 2 year contracts and when I called earlier when we were initially looking for houses, I was told that there would be a cancellation fee as the contracts were under 24 months and are 24 month contracts. The contracts are now over 24 months so they have become 36 month contracts? I am guessing soon they will become 48 month contracts? I would like to cancel as it is impractical to use the Gym Company and if things were handled better we would have used them in the future if a branch opened up close by.
