We arrived at Groot Vlei Guest Farm on 1 May, a family convoy full of plans and laughter after a Seychelles trip had to be postponed when I had a full knee replacement two weeks earlier. What started as a simple change of plans became something much deeper. The Vissershuisies — West Coast Style Glamping offered wind-swept charm, cosy units and the privacy we needed to rest, reconnect and celebrate together. On my 60th birthday, 2 May, the day unfolded like a beautiful surprise. The family debated restaurants and braais, and the staff at Groot Vlei insisted we use the lappa — then quietly transformed it into our celebration space. At breakfast I was fussed over like a king; my cheeks ached from smiling. The team made sure the fridges were chilled and the kitchen stocked with plates, glasses, champagne flutes and whisky tumblers — every size and function — so nothing was missing. Their warmth and attention felt genuine; strangers went out of their way to make me feel like I mattered. On the evening of the 2nd the place was filled with laughter, children playing, and soft tears rolling down cheeks as we reflected on my life: a son of the soil, an activist, a political prisoner once arrested under Section 29 of the Internal Security Act, and the exile who left and returned after 20 years away. Groot Vlei and The Vissershuisies gave us more than accommodation — they gave a space for healing, remembrance and family joy. We left with full hearts and memories that will stay with us forever.
