Glasfit Cresta/Blackheath – In-Store *******, Bad Service and Lack of Integrity

On the 15th Feb 2018, I was the victim of an in-store ******* at Glasfit Cresta/Blackheath. My cell phone, a Samsung Galaxy S8, was ****** right out of my hand while sitting at reception, waiting for a replacement to the front side passenger window of my Audi A4. Thankfully no-one was hurt!

A man came into the store inquiring about glass for his car. This would-be “customer” was obviously a ******** looking for an opportunity to ***** something of high value. I was obviously the “easy” target, innocently distracted playing a game on my phone, and not nearly attentive enough in a situation that no-one should ever be required, or expected to be.

This was a crime of opportunity but planned, never the less, as the man simply grabbed the phone out of my hand, ran out the store, and jumped into the open door of a car idling and waiting just outside. Before I even knew what had happened, shocked by the brashness of the whole thing, the car was already speeding down the road by the time I got to the entrance to protest.

Now, normally, I would have accepted this as sheer, utter bad luck and timing but the irony and, in this scenario, really big injustice of the whole thing was the reason I was there in the first place! Because Glasfit had *****ed up the replacement of my car window a week earlier, so I was back to have it replaced a second time!!! They scratched the glass the first time, put the door panel back incorrectly so it wasn’t sitting flush with the window, and also didn’t connect the electric window switch correctly so couldn’t operate it from neither the passenger nor driver side.

As my phone was not insured, I asked if footage of the incident could be obtained from the in-store cameras to assist with a possible police investigation, and also to ask if anything could be done from an insurance perspective. I was told that video footage was only kept at head office. Not that it mattered though because, after opening a police case and the police going round to investigate, it turned out that the in-store cameras were not and do not wor**** How about that for lulling customers into a false sense of security that their cars are safe while being worked on in-store!!!???

The real disappointment and frustration, apart from the sheer anger, was that I was stupidly expecting a big, well-known and respected company like Glasfit to at least compensate me by replacing my phone (which was only 9 months old), especially in light of the circumstances.

I would have accepted even part compensation but, instead, they threw their policy document at me saying that their insurance only covers them for damage and burglary to cars (although I’d like to see an insurance claim paid out when the in-store cameras don’t work!!). They actually referred to it as a common “mugging”! On their premises, in the “safety” of their store… a mugging… really!?

So much for the understanding, reputation, integrity and customer service we would expect from a company like Glasfit. These words obviously mean nothing to them and I’m afraid they don’t even live up to their own slogan “we fit the best, best” (defective glass and bad workmanship in my case).

Extremely disappointed with Glasfit and, even though they probably don’t care and this won’t mean anything to them, they have definitely lost a customer…

Good Day

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. It is definitely a concern when one of our clients has such an experience at one of our branches. Myself, the branch manager as well as the JHB region Manager do sincerely sympathise with what has transpired. No one can foresee that something of this nature can happen and when it does, it happens in an instance. With regards to the cameras we have reviewed them and have been assured that currently the branch has fully functioning cameras installed, although this offers very little comfort for the ordeal that you went through.

The definition of a ******** is an ever changing anomaly in our country. An individual who masquerades as a supposed client can walk into a place of business with malice intentions without anyone of us being the wiser to this.

However each of these negative experiences are lessons for us to adapt with situations that arise. We have noted that this trend is actually not only occurring in our places of business but we have seen a few videos where it is in restaurants, for example. But we at Glasfit need to work on contingencies to help minimise the threat.

Thank you

Kind Regards,

C.S.I DEPARTMENT

Reviewer Update
I’ve read through a lot of your responses on this forum and it, therefore, comes as no surprise that your response to me is the typical, stock standard one that you give all your customers. Namely, that you thank them for bringing matters (complaints) to your attention, that you learn from them and adapt, that you always strive to give your clients great service, that you value your clients business, etc, etc. Why is it then that your customer service levels, interactions and workmanship do not seem to have improved over time? There are countless complaints and issues about the same things! My initial review didn’t even cover the full story, namely how I waited almost 2.5 hours in-store for the initial repair after I was told to come in at a specific time (you obviously do not value our time), how the technician that worked on my car didn’t know what he was doing which is why he messed it up and took so long, how he didn’t bother to wash my window when done as he was in such a hurry to leave (it was half an hour after closing time), how he forgot a specialised Allen key tool under the seat of my car (which I personally returned the next day), how I was the one who had to constantly follow up with you to keep checking when the 2nd replacement window would be available for fitment after it was re-ordered (took a whole week), etc. With regards to your cameras, you are absolutely correct in saying that it offers me no comfort that they are working now! How did you not know that they weren’t working in the first place? Or, even worse, you did know but didn’t do anything about it! And this when you openly admit that you are aware of this type of crime happening in other businesses!!! Why did it take an incident like this, and only after potential public awareness of the situation, to prompt you into fixing them? I cannot help but wonder how convenient it was for the perpetrator to brazenly walk into your store and carry out this crime exactly at a time when your cameras were not functioning!!?? Coincidence...? The thing that gets me the most, however, is how you say that you “sincerely” sympathise with my situation, especially in light of the very unique and unforeseen circumstances. Do you really... or is it just words? If so, then why don’t you put your money where your mouth is and replace my phone? After all, I shouldn’t have been in your store on that day if the repair had been done correctly the first time. It would certainly go a long way towards showing that you not only care, but also value your customers, and are prepared to do the right thing and not hide behind policies and procedures!!
