Don't join if you want a scheme that actually cares ...

After 9 years uninterrupted membership with Genesis (as well as many years for a period before that) I had to cancel membership due to plans to work on a long contract abroad. On the last day of my membership I had to make urgent changes to my plans due to family emergency, hence I put in a request to Genesis to withdraw my cancellation. I was told that it was not possible as the cancellation had already been processed and I was therefore required to apply for new membership. I completed all requirements for this new application as soon as the forms were received and a few days later received communication from Genesis that I now had to have a 3 month waiting period placed on my new membership, or else pay an extra premium as I was now considered a "LATE JOINER". Of course they blamed underwriters and policies but GOOD-BYE Genesis and hello to another medical scheme that does give a damn ...

Dear Alison

The content of your review is noted.

Whilst we can understand your disappointment with the underwriting of your new application, it is important to understand that underwriting criteria are in no way related to any emotion or aspects of service delivery.

Medical aid schemes in South Africa may impose certain waiting periods and / or late joiner penalties on new memberships when joining a medical scheme.

Generally speaking, late joiner penalties depend on the amount of time an applicant has been a member (or not) of a South African medical scheme at the time of joining a new scheme, while waiting periods depend on the health risk profile of the applicant.

Although you were a previous member of the Scheme, your risk profile may have changed over the years, in other words, it may be different from when you app**** for membership a few years ago.

The two articles below explain the application of late joiner penalties and waiting periods as per the Medical Schemes Act.

Be that as it may, we wish you well in your journey of finding another medical scheme.  You may find that the same underwriting criteria are app**** by other schemes.

Yours sincerely

GENESIS MEDICAL SCHEME
