Rule not explained

Good day

I am a resigned member. I was on Ruby option, and a couple of months after resigning from my medical aid, I received a text message notifying me that I have an outstanding balance owing to GEMS. I did not understand the content of the text message, hence I contacted GEMS. For the first time I heard about the claw back. I requested for a policy document or a link on the website backing and explaining the claw back law. Till today, I have not received any documentation or a link to the website, but I am expected to pay for something I was not aware of. Before moving from Emerald option to Ruby, I did my comparison, and this claw back was really not stated as a difference between emerald and Ruby option. I also asked about the additional day to day that is available on Ruby option once the medical savings is exhausted, but apparently resigned member are not entitled to it. I would have really appreciate a direct link on the website that speaks to the claw back law, and in addition stating that resigned members are not entitled to additional day to day that is allocated on Ruby option.

Good day

Thank you for alerting us to your membership and benefit concerns.

As per our communication with you, we can confirm that your membership with GEMS was terminated on 31 January 2018.

Please note that you were on the Ruby option (savings option) and an amount of R5182.38 was allocated to you in advance at the beginning of 2018 with the understanding that you would be on the option until December 2018.

After the termination of membership, a savings journal was processed by the claims department and a savings claw back was created as you spent more from your savings than what was contributed. GEMS requested an amount of R3 586.38 to be paid back as the Scheme paid out more on benefits than contributions received.

We trust the above is in order.

Kind regards

The GEMS online team
