GEMS: So this is how you operate? I wanted to add an adult dependent to my existing policy. Straight from one medical aid to another. Did all the paper work. Last Friday I received a membership certificate: dependent added, no exclusions no restrictions. Today comes more communication that the dependent is subject to a THREE MONTH GENERAL WAITING PERIOD. So I contact GEMS and am told that is how it is. I discuss this at work with colleagues and am told not to worry, that the General Waiting period means no planned procedures and no day-to-day cover BUT in the event of an emergency, the dependent will be covered. So I phone GEMS again. Surely one rule applies to all? What am I told: NO. No cover at all, even in the event of an emergency, you can die, no cover at all. BUT you pay FULL CONTRIBUTION FOR THOSE THREE MONTHS. That is *******. I contacted 2 other medical aids to enquire about their waiting periods: no planned procedures, no doctor visits but full cover in the event of an emergency. Shame on you GEMS. Your prices increase and increase but your attitude towards members gets worse and worse.
