No Compassion Medical Aid

Member no. ***. My daughter was born 30/10/2015. I failed to register her birth within 60 days as my dad passed away after battling with cancer on the 13/11/2015 some 2 weeks later and I was busy with the ceremonies for his last rites. After registering my daughter late on the 19/01/2016 I was informed that accounts from the date of birth until 01/02/2016 ( her new registration date) will not be paid by the medical aid. I wrote various e-mails to GEMS explaining my situation and providing reasons for the late registration. However I was informed that all accounts from the date of birth until the 1/2/2016 will be for my account. I am distraught and disappointed at the lack of compassion shown to me by GEMS. Surely one can accept that an individual undergoing emotional grief should be allowed some compassion and perhaps an executive decision needs to be made in this special circumstance.

Good day deenadayalann,
Thank you for affording GEMS the opportunity to respond to your concerns. Please accept our most sincere apologies to you and your family on the loss of your father.
We are mindful of the difficulties you went through at the time, but unfortunately the rules of the Scheme stand even in unforeseen circumstances to allow us to give members across the board the same treatment. You can however apply for an ex-gratia consideration for those claims to be paid as your request unfortunately falls outside Scheme rules. Please keep in mind the application will go through the normal process for the Scheme’s consideration and approval.
We really hope that this will result in a positive outcome for you.
Yours in service,
