GEMS - This is not just a dispute — it’s about human dignity

I’m calling on @GEMS (Government Employees Medical Scheme) and relevant oversight authorities to urgently intervene in what is an intolerable situation.

Since 1 August 2025, my aunt — an 89‑year‑old dependent on her late husband’s GEMS medical aid — has been left without medical cover, without prior notice, and without a proper human response.

Key facts:

My uncle (the scheme’s principal member) passed away on 18 August 2025, after a period of serious ill health.

Despite repeated calls and attempts to obtain proxy authority or assistance, GEMS refused to recognize me or my aunt as duly authorised to deal with them, citing POPIA and insisting on the principal’s consent.

No direct notification (phone call or letter) was made to my aunt about termination of her medical aid — only a SMS on 9 September stating that her membership was terminated as of 31 August 2025.

On 17 September, during my last call, I connected with Nafeeza who tried to assist, but still nothing has changed.

On 26 September, my aunt suffered a severe fall (cracked pelvis) — precisely when she is most vulnerable and absolutely needs medical cover.

What I demand:

Immediate reinstatement of my aunt’s GEMS medical aid (even temporarily) while this matter is resolved.

A direct phone call / meeting with me, my aunt, or the executor of the will, within 2 business days, not an ambiguous 7–10 day email response.

A full explanation, in writing, of how the scheme could terminate coverage without prior human notice or due process.

Apologies and compensation for harm, costs, and stress caused by the lack of continuity in care.

If GEMS is unwilling or unable to do what is right, I will escalate this to the Council for Medical Schemes, the Public Protector, and publish this matter more widely until it is resolved.

This is not just a dispute — it’s about human dignity, legal obligation, and the duty of care owed to vulnerable dependents of deceased members.

Hi GEMS
Still no call?!
Your phones must be out of order ... as your client service is just as much out of order?
