Why does my fiancé when I add her to my medical aid because we are getting married in December have a 3 month waiting period when she has been on medical aid for all her life non stop and most of her life she was ons gems. And now i have to pay contributions for her when she is not covered for the three months

Thank you for alerting us to your concerns.
Kindly be advised that the Scheme imposed a three-month general and/or twelve-month condition-specific waiting period from 1 October 2016 on the following member categories:
-Principal members who resign from the Scheme with their dependants (without also resigning from the Public Service) and then re-join the Scheme at a later stage.
-Dependants who are resigned from the Scheme and who are then re-registered by the principal member at a later stage.
-Dependants who join GEMS on a different date from the principal member (excluding new-born babies and newly-adopted children).
In this case, the dependent was active on GEMS but resigned in 2016 to join Medihelp until November 2018. Therefore, a three-month general waiting period applies.
