Disappointed in GEMS

I've had a 3-4 month battle with GEMS to add my mother as a beneficiary. First they wanted to give her a 1 year waiting period because they didn't understand the documents I've sent through. (Medihelp's documents are in Afrikaans.). (Take note that a consultant got very rude with me on the phone and put the phone down in my ear.)

After many phone calls and emails they finally understood that she has been a member on Medihelp from 2006, so a member of a medical aid for 16 years. My father passed away last year and my mom is now financially depended on me. She also has chronic illnesses like, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Now finally the process is done and STILL they want to give her a 3 month waiting period. Spoke to another consultant this morning and very rudely shouted NO NO NO NO NO to me the whole time when I asked anything about the 3month waiting period.

I don't understand this. How will she get her chronic medication? If she gets a heart attack or get in a car accident must I take her to a State hospital?? Even though I am paying for Medial aid.

I have never had any problems with GEMS in my 15 years belonging to the scheme, I am actually very happy with my Medical aid, and that is why I didn't think twice about adding my mother to my Medical aid, but it has only caused me stress and headaches the last few months.

Very disappointed.

I know she has been added as I had to phone several times for this to happen.

No where on the acceptance letter does it say she has coverage for PMB. Why not? Must I have guessed this? How do i know if this is true if it is not on paper? As what GEMS says on the phone these days and what happens are 2 different stories.

And then you havent answered my question about shy she has a waiting period at all after being on a medical aid for 16 years. After it clearly states on your website that:

  • Provide full cover, without any waiting periods, for people who join with chronic or life-threatening conditions.

So why is this then not happening? Never havent been a break in medical aid. She is financially dependent of me, has chronic illnesses AND still this is not enough for Gems to do what they advertise?
