Penalty fare
Penalty fare for fare gates that could not handle volumes of customers! Returning from the rugby on the 31st of August 24, we entered through the fare gates at Park Station. Due to the volumes, the gates were faulty and you had to tap your card’s multiple times to gain access (or think you did). The fare gates were monitored so if you could not gain access, they would assist. My son tapped his virtual card and was granted access (or so he thought). He exited at Rosebank and all was good! The next day he received a nasty surprise of a penalty fare! I explained the situation to Gautrain and they insisted, my son, who is a minor, did not tap in correctly and therefore intentionally or unknowingly avoided the fare! I explained we are happy to pay the fare of R36 as he did on the way to the rugby in the afternoon. But no, we intentionally or unintentionally avoided the fare.
This was his first experience on the Gautrain and he ended up paying 7 times the fare! No goodwill offer by Gautrain or apologies for the charges! Just pay as our system was working as expected!
