Electric Fence of Poor Quality and Not Guaranteed

<p>During June 2016 I contracted Gerhard Steyn of Gates and Doors, Pretoria, to replace a section of my old electric fence, and to replace the energizer, at a cost of R11,249.52. During October 2016, Gates and Doors replaced the remaining section, at a cost of R10,417.32. The new energizer was remote controlled. At the time, I was happy with the cheerful service I received from Gates and Doors.</p> <p> </p> <p>During September 2016, I rented out the property.</p> <p> </p> <p>During April 2017, the fence malfunctioned. ElectroSurgeon advised that the energizer is faulty and should be replaced. I contacted Gerhard Steyn. who informed me that he would collect the energizer and take it in for repairs. About a week later, he brought back the "repaired" unit, however the energizer was no longer remote controlled. The remote control function is essential, as it is extremely hazardous to venture outside to switch off the fence alarm, in the event of it going off. The "repaired" unit malfunctioned constantly and the siren was almost inaudible.</p> <p> </p> <p>Not being able to reach Gerhard Steyn, I asked ElectroSurgeon to check it for me and to provide remote control units. They found the battery was totally flat, hence the inaudible siren. They replaced the battery. Regarding the remote control however, they informed me, to my surprise, that this model does not support this function. The charge for this callout was R1,882.50.</p> <p> </p> <p>I asked Gerhard Steyn about this, and he abolutely disputed the ElectroSurgeon findings. Gerhard promised to meet me at the premises the next day to install a receiver that would enable the remote control function.</p> <p> </p> <p>This was the last time I spoke to Gerhard Steyn. My calls to his number have since gone unanswered.</p> <p> </p> <p>My tenant provided me with photos of the energizer before and after the "repairs" and the box is of a different size, strongly suggesting that the box was swopped with an older model that does not support a remote control function.</p> <p> </p> <p>In addition to the warranty issue described above, there are also serious quality issues related to the fence installed by Gates and Doors. In January 2017, I contracted ElectroSurgeon to provide me with a compliance certificate for the new electric fence installed by Gates and Doors. I was taken aback to learn that there were many compliance shortfalls, and I had to pay R5,291.54 to fix all these problems (sign boards, lightning arresters and earth spikes). </p> <p> </p> <p>I am extremely disappointed in Gates and Doors as a supplier, specifically:</p> <p>- The product quality is inferior.</p> <p>- The warranty is worthless.</p> <p>- The owner is inaccessible in the event of product failure.</p> <p>- There are serious integrity issues with this supplier.</p> <p> </p>
