The same old story

Went to Game Menlyn on Saturday 04/07/2020 to buy a TV. There was only 1 sales rep in the section but I eventually got assistance from someone else. They informed me they had no stock (no surprise there) and we asked if they could check their system if Woodlands or Brooklyn had stock. We got the eternal response of "we can't check, our system is offline", to which I asked if they can call the stores rather. After about 20 minutes on the phone, they said that neither store had stock. Since I couldn't hear much dialogue, I am not sure if anything actually was communicated.

I then settled for another, more expensive TV and again, I got the response "our system is offline, so you will have to wait to validate your TV licence". About 5 other customers were also waiting to purchase a TV. We waited about 45 minutes before giving up and went to a competitor to buy a TV. Took about 30 seconds to validate my TV licence, and I walked out of the store about 10 minutes later with my brand-new TV set.

Game, really? It is a month-end weekend and your systems are "offline". Get a better POS. You are a major retailer, it is your Big Birthday sale, and you cannot sell a consumer a TV. After 2 months of no trade due to lockdown, one would think that you would lift your game (pun intended).

Post-lockdown, the retail environment has changed. Customers are more discerning and if you do not keep up, you are going to crash. I recall an article in the Sunday Times a few months ago where one of the head honchos at Game said they were going to focus on service and customer experience. Clearly, it hasn't begun yet.

Reviewer Update
A day after my poor experience, I was back at the Menlyn Branch because sometimes I'm slow to learn from my mistakes. This time I wanted to buy a soundbar. Again, only one sales rep on duty, so I had to wait again for assistance. Finally he was available, I asked a few questions about the item which he could more-or-less answer. I was about to buy it when he told me that I need an aux cable, but they did not have stock, and I must get one from Fastrak. I went across to Fastrak, explained what I wanted, the excellent salesperson convinced me to buy the soundbar from them instead, and 20 minutes later I was on my way home.

Seriously, Game. An aux cable starting RRP is from R30, but you did not have stock? Again, month-end weekend, Big Birthday Sale, etc etc. It's a simple but essential upsell item and to be out of stock is just silly. I can maybe understand stocking low levels of big-ticket items like a R60k TV, but not a small accessory line.

Game has lost more than R6k of sales from me in a weekend. This may be just a drop in the ocean compared to your total turnover, but I can also guarantee that I am not the only one with such a poor experience. Urgent change is necessary.
