New generator not generating electricity

We bought a Stramm 5.5 kw generator from Game Kolonade on 23.05.2015. It was not necessary to have used the generator until yesterday when we had loadshedding. We went through the Manual and did everything the Manuel said. The generator started and as per the manuel you have to allow it to run for a few minutes without any appliance and then the volt meter will pick up and then you connect the appliances. At first I thought maybe the volt meter just does not work and after a few minutes plugged in a lamp. It did not work so it doesn't generate electricity. I don't know whether there is something other than what the manual says that we should be doing. I phoned Game Kolonade today and spoke to Thabo, I thought he could maybe give me advise telephonically of something else to do or just some pointers. The sales people should have product knowledge to assist customers when necessary or when there is a problem. Thabo was not helpful and just said we should load the generator and take it in to them to check. Firstly we stay in Garsfontein and drove all the way there to support them but now that we have a problem on a brand new item we need to be inconvenienced to get the matter resolved
