Missing R1000 investigation

I have had a rather unfortunate experience at Game N1 City. On Wednsday, 2 November 2016, I purchased a 43" Sinotec TV valued at R3998 from Game N1 City. Unfortunately for me, I failed to count the money myself first before I handed it over to the cashier, and only realised the evening at home that I actually gave the cashier the entire R5000 which I withdrew from the bank before going to Game.

I then went to Game N1 City on the morning of 3 November 2016, and consulted the Store Manager, Gary Lauf, to inform him of the matter. He then called on one of the till/cash-up supervisors who confirmed that the cashier in question cashup have balanced the day before. The very same supervisor then went over to the cashier and asked her how much money I have given her and she could exactly remember that I have given her R4000. I mean, after serving so many clients with sales even bigger than mine, how in heavens name could she in a matter of a split second just remember my face and the amount of money I gave her. Myself and Gary then proceeded to review the cameras(which isnt very clear on the till point), but could notice that she have counted my money about 2 to three times which is normal, but however I have informed Gary that after counting it the first time she typed the "Total" button about 10 times and then decided to count the money again, and if I think back to the time now I could alomst swear she counted 2 two thousand rand stacks and 1 one thousand rand stack. If you review your cameras carefully and maybe with a qaulified detective you will notice all these things. Unfortunately we could not count the money with her while reviewing the camera due to the angle of the camera. However, a sale or 2 after mine the cashier helped another customer who paid by card and then counted the money again which I have given her(or maybe counted out the R1000, I am not sure what money she have counted) and Gary himself was very confused by this and told me that he will contact me just after 12PM when he have questioned her, as he also wanted to know from her how she got to void an item which she have scanned through amongst other questions. After 2PM on the same day I went back to the store and approached Gary again. Only this time he was a different person to the person he was the morning. I asked him what the outcome of the consultation with the cashier was and he blatantly told me that he did not question her and will not question her as there is no valid evidence, and that she is allowed to count her money whenever she wants to(This is lies all lies, because why was he not so confident about this the morning). he then complained about already spending so much time with me that day and blah blah blah as if I was not a valuable customer.

I then drove off with alot of anger in me and decided to contact the regional manager Charlie when I got back to my office. Charlie informed me that he will get the cashier to undergo a polygraph test. Gary emailed me the afternoon of Thursday 3 November and acknowledged that a polygraph will be conducted early the following week and that I will be notified once concluded. Like a fool I was waiting on the outcome on the polygraph test, and decided to call in on Wednesday, 9 November 2016, and spoke to Gary only to find out that the cashier declined to do the polygraph test which she have the right to do ofcourse unless otherwise stated on her employment contract. I was also told that I will receive formal correspondence with regards to this and the while investigation by the end of business on Friday, 11 Novemer 2016, due to him being very busy due to the festive preparations for the store(once again I am not a valuable client).

I must really be a pathetic customer, because it is now Saturday, 12 November 2016, and still no formal corresponce.

Neither Gary or Charlie could provide me with the details of the ombudsman. Could I please have the details of the ombudsman so that I can have the matter sorted out accordingly.

Regards,

Dean Adonis

Reviewer Update

I just want to thank the management team of Game N1 City, and especially Charlie Stathakis for going the extra mile in investigating the matter further and coming up with a solution to my satisfaction. This has been a long ongoing and tiring investigation but the outcome is satisfactory.

Charlie was the one who really showed empathy towards this matter, and this I could clearly see because after I called him the first time he immeiately showed that he took the matter seriously by making a decision to send the cashier in question for a polygraph test. Unfortunately the cashier denied to do the polygraph test. After I found out that the cashier rejected the polygraph test, I asked Charlie together with Gary whether I could return all items purchases from Game N1 City, and again Charlie agreed that I could get a full refund obviously showing his empathy to the situation, but my fiance stopped me from returning the goods.

However, after all the above mentioned, I would feel even more at ease and satisfied if the cashier could be dealt with accordingly, but obviously following the proper procedures to avoid you ending up at the CCMA or something of the sort. Because it is now festive season, and it would not be a good thing having dishonest cashiers working for your stores. Not only could it give the store a bad name, but it could also cause you to lose a lot of money. This is not my call to make, but the first thing I would do now is to take her off the tills completely, because for a person like this working with a lot of money does become rather tempting.

Unfortunately I cannot post the name of the cashier, as she have not been proven guilty and her name connot be mentioned to avoid legal action.

Once again, I recomment Charlie Stathakis and his team for service excellence. I will certainly continue shopping at Game N1 City.

Yours Faithfully,
