Forced purchase and compulsory policies

Are there any Customer Protection peeps out here?? Greenacres Shopping Centre

My story: Wanted to open a Markham Store card, the store was crazy busy so went to one of the group stores, G-Star Raw - Greenacres.

Lady said it was 5 to 10min

Was processed, I declined most of the offers that generally come with a store card, kept the credit protection as its SA after all. The sales consultant says they cant activate the account without some or other club magazine at R8 per month, I said ok go for it.

She hands me the card, tried to find the app on the play store no luck, she would give me a code to scan for the app.

Next, I have to make a purchase instore now to activate the card.... a little confused I asked why, only to activate the card, being G-Star Raw the cheapest item were socks for R399 I bite the bullet and said ok if I must....

Then I get the final paperwork to sign I ask, what will my standard monthly account fee be.....

1. A fee for death policy 2. A fee for disability policy And two or three other fees that are, wait for it....

Compulsory!!!

Luckily I hadn't signed anything yet, I start questioning all these extra fees, she says I should just take the account and cancel later whatever I dont want.

She very comfortably says, I can see you in a rush, its all standard you can just sign here....

I proceed to say, dont concern yourself with my rush, lets get this done properly. The more senior employee arrives and tries to explain to me that these are all Compulsory costs and service fees.

Just there, I said, Im sorry for wasting their time im not taking the account.

No my questions are: 1. Are they allowed to force a purchase to activate the card 2. Are all the additional services Compulsory 3. Was it Compulsory to sign up for the book if I could just cancel it the following month?

Not a very pleasant experience, left feeling rather embarrassed to say the least.
