Ford Fiesta Eco-boost engine failures / a tale of two engines
A tale of two engines. I purchased a Ford Fiesta Titanium Eco-boost, the engine had been winning international acclaim and I liked the fact that it was a pleasure to drive and exceptionally economical. The first engine was serviced as per the motor plan, however at 67776 km and 1 month out of warranty the ring landing on cylinder No1 collapsed and broke the piston. As we were on a vacation trip out of town the vehicle ended up in Worcester 130 km from home. The dealership approached Ford SA and they offered to replace the engine despite it being out of warranty. I paid for the labour and a few weeks later I collected the vehicle a reasonably happy customer. I was however informed that the replacement engine would only have a 1 year warranty on it as it was now viewed as replacement parts?? The second engine was serviced for the first time at 20580 km this was 25 months after fitment, clearly a high distance vehicle. 19 months later and 7823 km further mileage, I felt the same hiccup that had occurred as the first engine was about to fail. Once again on our way out of town we drove directly to the Ford dealership in Caledon. The technician opened the workshop and we drove in. The diagnostic was run on the vehicle and no issues were identified. Given the green light to continue our journey I started the vehicle and the engine failed in the workshop. Reattaching the diagnostic revealed that No1 cylinder had failed on this engine as well. The dealership approached Ford SA but was told that as I had not serviced the vehicle every year that they would not do anything for me. I approached Ford SA directly and they have once again said they are not prepared to assist. The issue I have with this is that Ford SA expects me to believe that a motor supp**** by them can fail at 29410 km because I did not service it. Yet the first engine failed in exactly the same way despite being serviced at the required intervals. The fact that the ring landing collapsed on two engines in the same vehicle in fewer than 100000 km travelled, means there is an undiagnosed issue with the peripherals of the engine, the heat management of the engine is suspect and Ford SA has not paid any attention to this. In the 8 weeks since it failed no technical investigation has taken place. I am expected to repair or replace the engine at my own expense whilst now knowing that the replacement engine is likely to fail once again as the diagnostic process does not identify what is going wrong with the engine. So, I am sad to say to my friends who I persuaded to by the Eco-boost vehicles to be very waryand to anyone considering buying one to be aware of these issues. To Ford SA, thanks for nothing.
