Poor service do not use connecting flights.
I should preface this with locally Safair has been a reasonable provider (plane cramped, but on time and efficient), although that being said I have been fortunate in my local flights to never need to talk to someone from Safair (other than Air Stewards). This is in regards to my experience I was flying with Safair from Cape Town to Zanzibar. For me they hit the four strikes in one leg and an extra strike afterwards which is VERY poor. 1. When booking in at CT they (unlike every other airline) do not check your bag through to the final destination. This meant that I needed to pick up my bag in JHB and re-check in at the desk. This was annoying, but we had just over an hour in JHB so just annoying at this stage. 2. They don't tell you that their international check in desk is in the domestic check in terminal. For those who know OR Tambo, these are at opposite sides of the airport, so quite a walk. This could have been communicated to us in the whatsapp message they send to customers, especially as we paid extra for baggage. 3. After doing the JHB domestic arrival - International - back to domestic check in sprint (as was getting panicked), we made it to the bag drop telling the staff member that we were there for the Zanzibar flight. The staff at the desk spoke to her colleague for a few minutes and then told us that we have missed the bag drop off. I informed her of the story and she said we would need to chat to the ticket desk and they would assist. 4. We then went to the ticket desk (which we had to queue for) and spoke to Megan, who blatantly **** to us saying that no airline checks through bags to the final destination and that we should have bought flights the night before. To her "credit", she was willing to put us on the next flight which was FIVE DAYS LATER. At the end of this long conversation, she said that Safair bag drop closes strictly an hour before departure, to which I looked at my watch and it was 10 minutes after the 1 hour pre departure mark. This made me more furious as we queued and had spoken to her at the ticket desk for what was (I am sure) more than 10 minutes not even counting the time we spent talking to the bag drop staff. It is then I realised that she didn't even check her PC at the bag drop, she just asked her colleague and sent us away.
Subsequent to this, I wrote to them explaining my experience. It is coming up to four weeks with no response to my email despite a chaser. No we are looking at this or nothing. I used to hold FlySafair in high regard and have travelled locally with them three times in the last quarter, however the test of a company is how they react when things don't go to plan and in this the have failed miserably. I would not recommend their international flights to anyone.
