Not willing to refund a ticket

Booked a flight in Dec 2017 for March 2018 for a confernece in CT... Conference has now been canceled due to water shortage.....and they will not refund my ticket. They say I should have done that before their 45 day policy....but im doing it at 22 days still to go #badservice
