Discovery Flexicare formulary list and lack of communication
The service from Discovery has really dropped somewhat in the last few years. It wasn't surprising to see the enormous blunders made by this medical scheme at the end of last year. Even Flexicare has become a joke. My chronic meds for various health conditions, which Discovery have paid for years on the chronic benefit, are now no longer covered. The way they went about doing it is the most worrying part and people should be aware that it no longer serves a purpose. I received an email from Discovery on 03 December 2025 notifying me about one of my chronic medications for my hypertension, and that it was no longer going to be funded by them. Here is part of the email that I received:
"We are writing to inform you of an important update to your chronic medicine benefits, effective 1 January 2026. As part of our commitment to sustainable, high-quality healthcare, we are updating our formulary list. What This Means for You From 1 January 2026: • Only medicines listed on the updated formulary will be funded • Non-formulary medicines - medicine not on the list, will no longer be funded To avoid any disruption in your treatment or unexpected out-of-pocket expenses, we encourage you to: • Review your current chronic medication with your allocated Flexicare General Practitioner (GP) • Obtain a new prescription for formulary-approved medicine before your next collection.
Your current medication/s affected by this change Name and surname Medication name TRACY SESSIONS Enap co 20mg/12.5mg
I duly took the action required, however the new medication covered by Discovery did cause an adverse reaction and I have had to resort to going back to Enap Co at my own expense since Discovery will no longer fund it.
Take note however that ONLY ONE medication was mentioned. And I am on several. It has come to light now that Discovery no longer will fund my other medications either. Yesterday I was informed by Discovery Flexicare that I should have consulted the updated formulary list regarding the other medications. My argument is why mention the one and not the others, on the email? Discovery should have then rather not mentioned any meds by name but should have rather said to consult the formulary list to check on ALL medications, instead of just bring my attention to one out of several on the covering email? Not to mention that one of the other meds they DID pay at the END of January 2026 but is now no longer on the formulary list either, and so therefore they do not fund ANY of my medications.
Also, sending the above email to me but then sending a "reminder" about the formulary list ON WHATSAPP to the PRINCIPAL MEMBER being my husband.
So we have lack of communication in that not ALL medications were mentioned on the covering email, one was still paid for end of January 2026 but is now suddenly not on the formulary list, and communication sent in different forms to different members of the family.
Needless to say my husband will soon be canceling our Discovery Flexicare membership. What is the point of being on something when they cover barely anything? Not to mention the absolute joke of a disaster when it comes to their admin which just continuously shows that they are in a mess.
