Zero Business Support
After banking with FNB for more than 10 years as a business client, I have finally reached the point where enough is enough.
Running and growing a small business in South Africa is already challenging, but through consistency and hard work I have managed to build my business into something solid. Unfortunately, the support from FNB has been nonexistent.
FNB has no issue deducting over R800 per month in banking fees, yet that same account cannot qualify for even a minimal credit card, overdraft facility, or any form of business support.
When calling in to ask how to improve my profile or qualify for funding, the response is always: “Speak to your business banker.” The problem is that the banker’s number listed on my statements has never worked, and in all these years I have never once been contacted — despite my business growing significantly from where it started.
I have now reached a stage where I am required to fund tens of thousands of rands upfront to complete approved and signed contracts, yet the bank is only interested in receiving inward payments and monthly fees, not helping businesses grow when support is actually needed.
Everything is pushed through automated systems with no understanding of the realities of running an SME. Applications are simply rejected with no proper explanation, guidance, or opportunity to discuss the business with an actual person.
My advice to other small businesses: choose a bank that invests time in understanding and supporting your growth. As for me, it is time to take my “small account” to a bank that values long-term business relationships and is willing to help SMEs succeed.
