Why cant i close my account?

I have been to FNB and I have requested them to close my cheque account (***) due to unauthorized debit orders on my account - they have declined in closing my account - I have no responsibility in paying the monthly fees - I never knew that you cant close your cheque account by FNB - I am not using this account anymore and i will not pay any monthly fees on this account ***
