Urgent Query Regarding Merchant Device Charges
Dear FNB,
I am writing with serious concern regarding a recent communication I received from SDK Attorneys about an alleged outstanding amount exceeding R7,000 related to merchant devices.
This has come as a complete shock to me.
At the time, the business linked to these devices unfortunately closed due to the impact of COVID-19. To the best of my knowledge, all merchant machines were returned, and I no longer have possession of any devices. If there is any discrepancy in your records, I would have expected this to be raised at the time—not years later.
Additionally, this matter appears to relate to events from more than five years ago. It is simply not reasonable to expect me to recall specific details or still have access to supporting records after such a long period, especially when no communication or follow-up was made by FNB during that time.
What is particularly concerning is the complete lack of communication from FNB over this extended period. The account linked to the devices was closed, and there would have been no transaction activity for months. Despite this, no effort was made to contact me, notify me of any outstanding balances, or provide an opportunity to resolve the matter early. Instead, the issue has now escalated to legal action without any prior engagement.
I have been a loyal FNB client for over 20 years. My personal and business banking, as well as my home loan, have all been through FNB. Over this time, significant volumes of funds have moved through my accounts. Given this long-standing relationship, I find it extremely disappointing that a matter of this nature—relating to relatively low-value equipment—has been handled in such a manner.
Furthermore, based on my understanding, the cash value of these devices is relatively low (in the region of approximately R1,500 per unit). It is therefore difficult to understand how the amount has escalated to over R7,000, and why such an aggressive recovery approach is being taken without prior engagement or explanation.
I am particularly concerned about the potential impact this may have on my credit record, especially considering that I was not given a fair opportunity to address the issue before it reached this stage.
I kindly request why no prior communication was made???
I trust that FNB will treat this matter with urgency and fairness, and I look forward to your prompt response.
Kind regards,
