Unauthorised debit of R4,000

I missed my bond payments in December & March this year & my other payments have been on time. In December when I approached the bank to say I'll have a problem making the payment I was told that because my account is in good standing they cannot make arrangements of any kind & once it's behind they'll look into the matter. After that when I spoke to various agents from Home Loans they kept pushing me to make huge payments which I could not afford.

This month they decided to deduct an extra R4,000 from my account without having made any such arrangement with me, causing some other debit orders to bounce & leaving me with a balance of -R29 for the entire month. I've been told by FNB that there is no option to reverse this. Now I'm in arrears with 2 extra companies, will lose money on bank charges for returned debits & I have no money for basic necessities like electricity, water, petrol to get to work& food.

I would really like to know if this is ethical & even legal?

The response from FNB:
They couldn't get hold of me so did a debit of R4,000 as there was no payment arrangement in place & how much will I be paying going forward.

Absolutely brilliant.
My questions were - is this ethical & is it legal?
