Taking money with no notice

I have a normal cheque account with no overdraft facilities, and I logged in to my banking app this morning only to see that my account is almost a thousand rand in arrears, R600 of which is bank penalty charges. I didn't receive any notice of my account being overdrawn, nor did I receive any notice that my account was being debited for penalties I shouldn't have to pay. How can a standard cheque account be so far in the negative without any overdraft facilities?? And I haven't swiped my card in a week, so all my debits were still pending at the time. Severely unimpressed with the fact that the bank has now taken R600 out of my account for an overdraft that I don't even have
