Private banking at FNB sucks big time
I was convinced by a friend to move to FNB as their service was superior. I opened an Private clients account during a visit to FNB Menlyn on 26 July 2018 where I was told the account was opened with a R 22 500 overdraft. An application for a credit card with R 150000 limit was also approved. I was told that my salary for August would have to be deposited into the account and that FNB would move my existing debit orders to FNB for end August. Unfortunately my mom passed away the next day and this is where all my problems began.
During the following week while trying to organise a funeral, on 1 August a debit of R 140 went off on the account. This was not supposed to happen and the fault was FNB's. I was annoyed but consoled by the fact that I was told there would be an overdraft on the account to cover this. Imagine my surprise when the debit order is returned (first time in my life - for an amount of R 140), tarnishing my credit history! I tried to contact the personal banker I was promised would be available, but to no avail. I then get a penalty of R 100 for a returned debit order. After eventually getting hold of my personal banker on Tuesday morning 5 August, he promises to sort out this mess and hopefully the emails warning me that I am now in arrears would stop!
By Friday afternoon 10 August , after receiving more emails warning me to fix the account, which was still in the red by R100, I went back to FNB branch to stop my move to FNB, which had been most unsatisfactory so far. In order to close the cheque account I was told I had to pay the R 100 penalty (caused by FNB) and the prorata service fee for the month (For an account I had no use of) which came to approx. R 292. I paid this at the cashier (I was told cash only and had to first leave to withdraw this amount) in the hopes of bringing this unpleasant saga to an end. To my surprise I was told in order to close the credit card account I could not pay at the teller- I had to pay the cash of R175 (initiation fee for a card that has not been used) into a ATM, which was a mile long and the only way that it could be done! - This was where I lost it a little bit because after two hours I was told the ATM could not accept the R5 coin. After approaching a supervisor and experimenting with various other payment methods and paying an additional R60 to facilitate payment of the R175, it was eventually paid into the credit card. I was told the card would be closed forthwith.
Imagine my surprise when I saw on Monday 13 August that the card had still not been closed. On Wednesday 15 August I am notified that this card has now been debited with a further R 100 delivery when I was told originally that there would be no charge for this. Is there any rationally thinking official in FNB who can actually help me fix this situation???
