No credit because no credit

I app**** for a credit card. The application was denied - via sms with a number for me to call if I had a query.

I called and was told that I cannot get a credit card because I do not have credit anywhere else. I was advised to open accounts at chain stores to build up a credit rating. I queired the logic of this and was put through to at least three other people. I was told to send an email asking for another review. Still denied. I cannot understand how I am being told to get into debt so that I can get credit. I also think it would be courteous for FNB to call me and not simply send a second sms.
