Money moved to a dormant different bank account without my consent

I am extremely disappointed with the service I have received from First National Bank. On 28 January, I made a genuine human error by transferring R3000 from my FNB cheque account to what I believed was my own PayShap account. I did not understand at the time that the transfer would be processed between different banks. I selected my cellphone number from the two options presented, as it was marked as the recommended option. At no point during the process was Standard Bank mentioned or selected by me. After making the transfer, the system repeatedly gave me errors when I tried to register for PayShap. That is when I realised something was wrong. I immediately contacted FNB on 28 January and have since spoken to numerous consultants, none of whom were able to properly assist me. Eventually, I was informed that the money had gone to Standard Bank. This makes absolutely no sense to me. I do not actively use a Standard Bank account, and nowhere during the transfer process did Standard Bank appear as the receiving bank. I do have an active Tyme account, yet the funds did not reflect there either. What I fail to understand is how FNB’s system determines where funds are sent without my explicit selection or consent. My transfer was from my FNB cheque account using my cellphone number. From my perspective, my money should have remained secure within FNB unless I clearly authorised otherwise. I was then asked to provide a Standard Bank statement. I refuse to run around trying to obtain documentation for an account I do not use, especially when this issue originates from FNB’s system. It is unacceptable that I must do investigative work to recover my own money. Over the past few weeks, I have had to repeatedly explain myself, confirm personal details multiple times (including my surname change), and fight for basic answers. Only after escalating the matter did I manage to get a promise of a senior consultant calling me back. R3000 is not a small amount of money to me. If FNB’s systems can send funds to another bank without my clear authorisation, then I have serious concerns about the safety of my money. If this matter is not resolved urgently and my funds are returned, I will have no choice but to escalate the matter further, including seeking legal advice and reconsidering my banking relationship with FNB. This entire experience has been exhausting, frustrating, and completely unacceptable. I am definitely laying a complaint with the banking ombudsman.
