HARRASSMENT BREAST CANCER SURVIVER BY FNB CREDIT CARD
In 2018 I was on Disability Unemployment Benefits following complications from breast cancer treatment. At the time I had a credit card debt of approximately R67 533.00. This debt was covered by FNB credit insurance.
The initial payment arrangement was for R1000.00 per month as I was deeply overdebted due to having to give up work due to the illness. I, in the interim, have increased the amount paid and now pay R1800.00 (increased monthly) and pay in excess of the monthly interest on the account. I have in fact paid over R17 000.00 against this debt. The strange thing is that the amount owed increases every month instead of decreasing. The total outstanding now according to FNB and their attorneys is R82 000.00. All the other accounts I paid over this period are either paid up or have a couple of instalments to go.
The excess paid monthly is not deducted from the capital and the interest rate decreases that have occurred over the period have not been app****.
A white male DA member had his entire account credited by FNB while I was handed over. This is ************** on top of the discrepancies with regard to payment and interest rates. Why was his account written off and mine handed over?
The other issue is what happened to the credit insurance on the account? The complications of breast cancer affected me cognitively at the time, and FNB took advantage of my illness and vulnerability and handed me over to debt collectors to collect the arrears who have harassed me on behalf of FNB. They are now, demanding increased payment of R2800.00 per month. What is the point of me increasing the payment when the capital never comes down and has in fact increased by R20 000.00?.
The issue needs to be investigated in full and there needs to be transparency regarding how the payments and interest are app**** to the debt.
