Funeral cover lapsed

I was retrenched last year in March, i did inform Fnb life about it, only to find out that my funeral cover that I've paid for years it has lapsed i still don't understand how that can be possible as i was going in a rough time, i was hoping that they will give me grace time so i may continue pay my cover.
