***** on my sons account

On the 23/7/2016 at about 10:15am my son was standing at an ATM to draw some cash. As he took his card from his wallet a ***** ran past him and took his card from his hand before he could put it in the machine. He called me as he had no airtime to call the bank to stop the card. It’s a toll free number but when calling from a cell phone it is not free. I transferred R55 airtime to his cell phone at 10:20am (I transferred it from my FNB app). He then called FNB at 10:23am to report this.

But in the meantime at 10.21am someone had withdrawn R900 from his account. He probably was dialling the FNB number already. As FNB have it that he called at 10:23am.

After having to wait 3 days to fill in a ***** form as FNB where off line , only to receive a letter from FNB to say that he must off had his pin with the card in order for them to withdraw money from a chip card. This is absolute nonsense. I know that these ********** use the magnetic strip to get the pin code. I had the same experience with my card at Nedbank and they did not hesitate to pay me back my money without making me feel like the *****.

But I guess he got treated this way before he is a 24 year old and does not have a big bank balance. FNB then assume he is careless, he is not. He is a gentleman and does not deserve to feel like it was his fault. He was traumatised to say the least and it was 3 minutes between the money being drawn and his call to FNB.

I will not leave it here. I am going to the Ombudsman of banking and even if I lose, it is going to cost FNB R3500 to reply to the Ombudsman’s.
