FNB shocking "opt-out for no' SMS to change payment date and levy fees
I too had my credit card date of payment changed and it was disastrous because I was managing funds carefully and there were 2 late payments which I have been charged through the nose for. Long story short, after months of appalling service, is that I have to provide proof (a screenshot) that I rep**** "No" to their "opt out to avoid date change campaign". In fact I did reply no to an SMS (horrified at the time) but FNB says they have no record of this and I'm liable for double payments due to late payment amounting to around R6000. Client service rep Allan Bossinger says that if I supply proof I smsed No, then FNB will look at the account again for me. He didn't seem to understand that changing my payment date this way is a serious breach of FNB's credit licence. Nonetheless I have requested the record from MTN because it exists and shows FNB is doubly wrong in my case. FNB is authorised to communicate important matters with me by email, not SMS! And the opt out is shocking. It turns out that 2 smses were sent out, and I only ever saw one I am spammed constantly by SMS from FNBank I am under no legal obligation to read their messages. When i missed a payment they cancelled my card, again my SMS, in violation of terms. In fact I had unused budget facility I could have used if I was aware of what was happening, but I had no idea. FNB is saying it was a " salary alignment" exercise which doesn't hold up because very few people are paid on the 14th who have FNB credit cards, and anyway they didn't ask when I'm paid. I have requested data on how many South Africans with credit cards are paid on the 14th... As part the the report I am filing with the credit ombudsman. It is shocking in this climate of corporate ***** affecting the reputation of our country that a major bank would behave this way. I have been tyring to sort this out since June: first no response "Jacobs", FNB's frontman on Twitter, then no calls picked up, then No 409 in the queue online, then weeks go by with no response from "tech team". I had to ask Bossinger THREE times to escalate my complaint, eventually he did but now it's been a week and still no response. Fortunately, I worked in the newsroom of The Sunday Times for 15 years and once I get a response from the Ombudsman, either way, this story is going to go viral. I an absolutely gobsmacked and disgusted and I goes without saying that my accounts are in the process of being moved to another bank. Sally Shaw
