FNB overcharging me unfairly

I am writing with regard to failure to close an FNB account I had in 2014. I was employed from February 2014 until March 2014, and due to unemployment, I decided to close my account. I went to the FNB branch in Melville to do so a month or two later, and on trying to close my account, I was told by a consultant that I couldn't do so due to money owed. She said I could only close my account by paying off the money first, which made no sense to me. As a result, due to still being unemployed some months later, I continued to receive messages from FNB, which have since stopped. What puzzles me is why my account was not closed and written off soon after it was reflected that no more money was coming into my account.

I am told that this is FNB procedure but I am livid. How can someone who is unemployed and forced to close their account only liable to do so after they pay off the money they owe?
I believe I was unfairly treated and received poor service from the consultant.
I was sent a statement saying I owed R221 and that the account would be closed 35 days later upon no response.I did not respond and still the account was not closed.Instead it was now four times the amount. How so?
