FNB Forex - Must be the worst Foreign Exchange Service provider in South Africa - No doubt about that!

I am a retired South African citizen. My wife and I are spending a prolonged period travelling throughout Europe.

From time to time, as my foreign currency becomes depleted, I apply for Euro currency to be transferred to my Spanish Banking account via SWIFT. As a loyal and retired FNB banker, I utilise the services of FNB Forex for my foreign currency requirements. Regrettably, after the fourth attempt of applying for foreign currency in the past three years, my experience with FNB Forex has been nothing less than atrocious. On each occasion, I have experienced shocking service delivery!

To minimise human interaction with FNB Forex on this occasion, I decided to use their Online Banking Forex platform to apply for foreign currency. The application process was great and appeared to be simple and fast. Alas, 48 hours later and without any form of acknowledgement from FNB Forex, I have still received no confirmation that my application has been processed, despite addressing an e-mail to their ********** helpdesk and a staff member at Forex ********** I have received no response whatsoever. I also addressed an e-mail to my “Private Banker” ********** and received an “autoreply” stating that he was no longer in the job. (just moved along without informing his customers!)

I now face an exchange loss – I app**** at a rate of R14.19 to the Euro, the rate has now escalated to R14.50 to the Euro. I have also transferred the funds required for conversion from an investment account to my staff cheque account, which does not attract interest – a loss of interest to me too.

If this is the service that an ex FNB banker receives, then I fail to understand how FNB Forex exists as an authorised provider of foreign exchange services. I assume that customers must be running away in their droves…
