FNB enables ********** debit orders
On 30 June, a ********** debit order from MTN registered on my FNB account, to the value of over 6K. I spoke to FNB via the SecureChat and I was seriously ****ed off to find that I would be charged to reverse it. This despite the fact that I hadn’t authorised it, nor had a contract or any kind of agreement with MTN. I was charged even though FNB had allowed the ***** to happen - and then they made money off it.
On 31 July, there was a ********** debit order YET AGAIN. From Telkom this time, to the tune of just over 1K. You can imagine I blew my top, as it seems that FNB allows free-for-all ********** debit orders to be lodged against people’s accounts. All because they aren’t being verified beforehand. And then FNB is (a) directing people to chat to the merchants who have **********ly taken their money via debit order - enabled by FNB and (b) money is being made by FNB to fix something they could have prevented, by simply checking with the customer as soon as a new debit order is loaded.
The fact that a ********** debit order was loaded and once again FNB didn’t flag anything or check with me, as the account holder, leads me to believe this is a systemic and ongoing issue. With FNB happy to let it happen, as they make money from debit order reversals.
It suits MTN to use DebiCheck for verification, but not other times.
It’s clear the bank isn’t prepared to take responsibility for allowing ***** and then further enabling it. This has been an issue that has been going on for the last 4 years with them, based on other complaints I've now seen. 4 years and they haven't increased security protocols. What makes me sick is that FNB profits off NOT doing anything about it, as they gain money when people reverse ********** debit orders the bank should have verified beforehand.
I really can't believe the back then sends the customer to be Sherlock Holmes, expecting their customer to spend their airtime, data and time following up ***** scenarios the bank has made no effort to prevent. Despite this, I emailed MTN using the email address provided by FNB, of the supposed consultant who loaded the debit order. Needless to say, there was no response.
FNB is basically allowing whoever to access your money whenever. And then when ***** occurs, they put the onus on you as the customer to follow up with what they allowed to happen. It's outrageous.
