FNB Debits My Account Without Consent And Still No Accountability
After months, if not years, of fighting with FNB over their failure to debit my Discovery account and being told repeatedly that Discovery does not support DebiCheck, FNB has now gone ahead and debited my account without any prior notice or consent.
This follows a long timeline of negligence that began last year. In June 2025, Hlengiwe Mtwana confirmed by email that all debit orders were in order. In September 2025, Hlengiwe Hlombe claimed I was called and advised that Discovery and Investec can't be debited due to DebiCheck, but such a call never took place. On 6 September 2025, Tshireletso Segano wrote that Discovery does not support DebiCheck mandates and instructed me to pay manually. From August 2025, I have done exactly that, making manual payments every month. Despite this, FNB recently attempted to “try something” with my Discovery debit order, again without my consent, and has now debited my account without any communication or authorisation.
This conduct is a clear breach of the National Credit Act 34 of 2005, specifically Sections 90 and 92, which require transparent disclosure and consumer consent for any credit payment instruction, and Section 54 of the Consumer Protection Act, which guarantees fair, timely, and proper service.
I have lodged a formal complaint with the National Financial Ombud, under reference ***, and will escalate this matter to the National Credit Regulator. FNB must explain how they can unilaterally debit an account after confirming in writing that it was not debitable.
This ongoing negligence involving Hlengiwe Mtwana, Hlengiwe Hlombe, Tshireletso Segano, Laurelene Vermeulen, and Sheldon Katsky has already damaged my credit record, cost me a vehicle finance approval, and has now extended to unauthorised transactions.
FNB must stop shifting blame and accept responsibility, resolving this matter immediately.
