FNB came after me for debt on a *****ulent account they opened in my name

I have never been an FNB customer, actually I can confidently say I have never even set foot inside an FNB branch! In December 2024 I got a call from and FNB ***** investigator saying that I owed money on an overdraft on a check account and on the personal loan that I had taken out. My initial response that this was a phishing ****! As the conversation progressed I was able to convince the investigator that I was not the person FNB had loaned money to. He advised me to register as a ***** victim with the South African ***** Prevention Service. I did this as well as register with Experian to get a credit report for myself. To my horror there were the two FNB accounts as well as one from another micro lender. I contacted FNB myself to inform them that they had opened *****ulent accounts in my name and had clearly not done any home affairs linked due diligence. My bank, Capitec, does this so I know my biometric records with home affairs are correct. My approach to resolving this was to work through Experian and lodge a dispute. I verified my actual identity and signature with them. They were very efficient and by February 2025 I was notified that my dispute was successful. Both the FNB accounts and the loan from the microlender were removed from my credit profile. I believed this was the end of it and though nothing more of it until January 2026 when I suddenly started getting harassed by various dept collections agencies ‘working on behalf of FNB’. They were relentless and would SMS and call around 5 times a day 6 days a week on my personal mobile as well as at my place of work. I have registered a case with the Information Regulator against FNB as a result of this. I believe FNB had no right to hand over my personal information to a various third parties. This is surely in contravention of the POPIA act. To resolve this new problem I tried so many time to call FNB but was just bounced between *****, collections and complaints departments. Not being an actual customer of theirs I had not option to get in touch via their ‘award winning app’, that their call center on-hold sound track keeps punting, so I was forced to spend lots of my own time and airtime trying to make this go away. What I gathered from all these calls is that FNB had closed the personal loan on the **** profile they had for me, but somehow that message didn’t get to the cheque account department and they still thought I should be paying back the overdraft. Suddenly, a few weeks ago the calls all stopped with zero feedback from anyone at FNB, despite me lodging a new ***** case with them and providing all the proof of identity they requested. Does this mean that *****ulent cheque account is closed or are we now progressing to the next stage where they could potential get a judgement against me for unpaid debt? I am so sick of this situation I’m not interested in calling them again for an update! Note to FNB, if you're going to open accounts based on **** ID documentation and your systems are not sophisticated enough to do biometric verification with the home affairs database, then kindly write off the debt and don’t harass law abiding citizens!
